COERR Rendered Emergency Disaster Assistance in Temporary Shelters

During the rainy season of May – August 2023, there were heavy rainfalls that caused flash floods, landslides, etc. in many places like houses, schools, roads, etc., including temporary shelters. COERR Mae Hong Son, Mae Sarieng and Kanchanaburi rendered several activities to relieve the displaced persons’ suffering as follows:

During May 15-19, 2023, COERR Mae Hong Son repaired roof and wall of COERR’s Child Friendly Spaces in Ban Mai Nai Soi Temporary Shelter and on June 3, 2023, repaired toilet roof in Child Friendly Space in Ban Mae Surin Temporary Shelter, which were damaged by fallen trees, to enable children to attend learning activities and use the toilets safely throughout this rainy period.

COERR Kanchanaburi delivered road construction materials such as gravels and cement for displaced persons to repair the main road inside Ban Tham Hin Temporary Shelter in Ratchaburi Province which was damaged by soil erosion during heavy rainfalls. This made the road impassable. Thus COERR Kanchanaburi deemed it necessary to support gravel and cement to the displaced villagers to strengthen the roadside in order to prevent future erosion. This would make the road safe enough for vehicle to travel into Ban Tham Hin village in this rainy season.

In Ban Don Yang Temporary Shelter in Kanchanaburi Province, on June 10, 2023 it was raining so heavily that some tree branches broke and fell down on the side of school toilets and damaged school wall. A lot of mud clogged the toilets’ drainage, which caused toilets unusable. COERR Kanchanaburi then supported construction materials such as 5 cement bags, 50 brick blocks, 10 sacks of coarse sand, 5 pieces of three-inch-wide timbers for school teachers and parents to help repair the toilets, dredge the drain and make appropriate slope to make toilet floor dry for children to use again.

The heavy rain on August 1, 2023 caused many areas in Mae Hong Son Province’s Sob Moei District, including Ban Mae Lama Luang Temporary Shelter, to be flooded with water and mudslides. There were 60 households that floods washed away their belongings. COERR Mae Sa Rieng then distributed kitchen utensils such as stove, water bucket, cooking pots, plates, drinking cups, etc. to alleviate the sufferings of these flood victims and sustain their daily living.
